Jonathan Epley grew up in the mountains of East Tennessee, discovering his love for the guitar under the watchful eye of his uncle, renowned Martin historian and luthier John Arnold. Frequent visits to Arnold’s workshop introduced him to a host of exceptional acoustic guitarists—among them legends like Norman Blake and Doc Watson—whose artistry inspired Epley to begin honing his craft at a young age. Rooted in the Bluegrass and Folk traditions of his upbringing, Epley broadened his musical perspective through Jazz, Electric Slide Guitar, Blues, and Progressive Rock, shaping a versatile style that spans multiple genres.
Today, Epley brings his distinctive voice to the Temporal Taal Collective, an ensemble dedicated to blending Western and Eastern musical traditions into a growing body of innovative works. He thrives on the synergy that emerges when small-group improvisation intersects with a larger orchestral backdrop, finding excitement in both the intimacy and the expansiveness this collaboration offers. With each new piece the ensemble debuts, Epley hopes audiences experience a genuine sense of cultural fusion and wonder—emotions he believes are at the heart of the Collective’s expanding repertoire. As a key contributor to this evolving musical tapestry, Jonathan Epley continues to push the boundaries of his instrument, creating moments that captivate listeners and celebrate the art of cross-cultural collaboration.
