Nabin Shrestha stands as a pivotal force in the Temporal Taal Collective, bringing his profound mastery of the classical tabla to audiences around the world. A preeminent percussionist known for his mesmerizing performances in Nepal, the United States, and beyond, Nabin combines the rich tapestry of diverse tabla traditions with a fearless openness to collaboration. His artistry seamlessly connects musicians and dancers across genres—where East meets West, rhythm meets melody, and every performance becomes a breathtaking journey.
Nabin’s musical path began at age eight under the tutelage of Guru Shree Rabin Lal Shrestha and the nurturing guidance of his brother, Rajendra Shrestha. He has continued to expand his craft, earning a Master’s degree in Music from Gandharva Music University—where he received the prestigious Shri Hari Om Trust Award—and studying with luminaries such as Ustaad Shri Faiyaaz Khan, Shri Tansen Shrivastav, and the legendary Taalmani Pandit Sureshji Talwalkar. These formative experiences cultivated Nabin’s belief in perpetual learning, inspiring his dedication to exploring new rhythmic dimensions throughout his career.
Upon returning to Nepal, Nabin emerged as a sought-after recording and performing artist, releasing groundbreaking albums like “Raaganubhuti” (Hindustani Classical), “Murchchhana” (Jazz Fusion), and “Re-drums” (Traditional Nepali Drums and Tabla). He also founded Murchchhana, a jazz-classical fusion ensemble, while teaching at Tribhuvan University. In addition, he has broadened minds through lectures, workshops, and demonstrations at academic institutions across the United States, sharing his passion for tabla and its vast musical possibilities.
Today, as a core figure in the Temporal Taal Collective, Nabin elevates music to a transformative experience by blending his deep Hindustani roots with Western classical and jazz influences shared among fellow members. Through collaborative works—such as the ensemble’s innovative “Nightfall Rhapsody”—he delights in forging new sonic landscapes and guiding audiences on an evocative journey. Whether leading listeners through a journey of dusk or breaking rhythmic boundaries in a fusion setting, Nabin’s excitement lies in creating fresh, unexpected dimensions of sound. By uniting cultures and musicians from every corner of the globe, he invites listeners into the ever-evolving tapestry of tabla-driven artistry.
