Nightfall Rhapsody:

Concerto for Bansuri, Saxophone, Tabla, Guitar, Bass, Kathak Dancer, and Orchestra

A Cultural Tapestry of Sound, Storytelling, and Discovery

Nightfall Rhapsody—formerly titled Rhapsody in राग जोग (Raag Jog)—reflects a thoughtful evolution in how this groundbreaking composition is presented to audiences. The new title embraces the universal and evocative image of nightfall, aligning with the piece’s roots in Raag Jog, a raga traditionally performed in the late evening. This reimagining invites listeners into a meditative yet dynamic journey of sound, storytelling, and cultural connection.

This unique, 22-minute concerto, written by Drew Zaremba for musician Anjan Shah, bridges Eastern and Western musical traditions. It weaves together the voices of bansuri flute, tenor saxophone, tabla, guitar, bass, and orchestral strings, enriched by the expressive rhythms of Kathak dance. Together, they create an immersive soundscape that celebrates cultural heritage, emotional depth, and artistic diversity.

Rooted in the classical Hindustani forms of Alap, Peshkar, and Sawal Jawab, Nightfall Rhapsody retains the episodic flow of a Western rhapsody, blending improvisation and structured composition. The addition of Kathak, introduced by Dr. Sarah Morelli, brings authenticity and vibrancy to the performance, using movement to enhance the narrative and emotional storytelling of the piece.

For Anjan Shah, Nightfall Rhapsody is a deeply personal work. It reflects his journey as a first-generation American, navigating the complexities of identity while honoring his Indian heritage. The piece serves as a tribute to his father, Girish Shah, whose dream of becoming a classical dancer was left unfulfilled. Through music and dance, Anjan celebrates his father’s aspirations and the rich traditions that shape individual and cultural identities.

“Through this project, I hope to inspire reflection on the connections between heritage and innovation,” Anjan shares. “Nightfall Rhapsody celebrates traditions that cross generations while inviting audiences to discover the beauty of cultural fusion.”

This powerful work offers more than a performance—it’s an invitation. By blending traditional Hindustani music with Western orchestration and jazz improvisation, Nightfall Rhapsody creates a bridge between cultures, sparking conversations that connect diverse worlds. Designed to inspire both seasoned concertgoers and those discovering orchestral music for the first time, it offers a unique lens into Indian culture through music, movement, and storytelling.

With its innovative fusion of sound and dance, Nightfall Rhapsody is a pioneering composition that transcends boundaries—a shared story of discovery, belonging, and universal connection.
